NORAH JONES RELEASES VISIONS PRODUCED BY LEON MICHELS VIBRANT NEW STUDIO ALBUM OUT NOW ON BLUE NOTE

Don't try to second-guess Norah Jones. Just when you think you've got her figured out, she'll reinvent herself... ‘Visions’ [is] her most unpredictable yet, a fruitful collaboration with producer Leon Michels… Jones has rediscovered her mojo… [The] multi-Grammy-winning singer/songwriter finds joy in musical rebirth.

MOJO ★★★★

her latest offering is her most interesting in years: ‘Visions,’ a funky, gently psychedelic garage-soul record that puts her sultry vocals amid fuzzy guitars, off-kilter drums and crinkly vintage keyboards.

Los Angeles Times

9-time GRAMMY winning singer, songwriter, and pianist Norah Jones has released her ninth solo studio album Visions, a collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Leon Michels, as well as the official video for the song “Paradise” directed by Joelle Grace Taylor which celebrates the rollercoaster of life. Visions is a vibrant and joyful 12-song set that is the yang to the yin that was Pick Me Up Off The Floor, Jones’ last album of new original songs which was released early in the pandemic lockdown of 2020 and foreshadowed many of the dark emotions of that period.

“When I first heard the songs on Norah’s new album, Visions, it was evident that she had weathered the storm and emerged with an enlightened perspective,” says Blue Note President Don Was. “She’s singing about being awake, wanting to dance, finally feeling free, being on her way to making it right, and acceptance of what life brings. She’s seeing light at the end of a tunnel that had engulfed her four years previously and is offering guidance, comfort, and joy to others who may find themselves standing at similar crossroads.”

“The reason I called the album Visions is because a lot of the ideas came in the middle of the night or in that moment right before sleep.” says Jones. “We did most of the songs in the same way where I was at the piano or on guitar and Leon was playing drums and we were just jamming on stuff. I like the rawness between me and Leon, the way it sounds kind of garage-y but also kind of soulful, because that's where he's coming from, but also not overly perfected.”

Michels played saxophone in Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and has performed with Lee Fields & The Expressions, Dan Auerbach’s band The Arcs, Menahan Street Band, and his own project El Michels Affair. Michels and Jones first collaborated on the single “Can You Believe” and later worked together on Jones’ 2021 holiday album I Dream of Christmas. Visions also features contributions from trumpeter Dave Guy, bassist Jesse Murphy, and drummers Brian Blade and Homer Steinweiss.

Visions is available now on formats including indie record store exclusive orange blend vinyl featuring an alternate cover, Barnes & Noble exclusive teal blend vinyl, as well as a Target exclusive CD with the bonus track “Until My Heart is Found” and poster.

Jones performed the lead single “Running” earlier this week on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and will be making additional TV appearances this morning on NBC The Today Show and tomorrow on CBS Saturday Morning. Norah Jones has shared her spirited new song “Staring at the Wall” along with an accompanying video which was directed by Jones and Kyle Paas and features studio footage as well as Norah’s handwritten lyrics. It’s the second track to be revealed from the nine-time GRAMMY winning singer, songwriter, and pianist’s vibrant ninth solo studio album Visionswhich comes out March 8 on Blue Note Records. A collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Leon Michels, the album was introduced last month with the lead single “Running.”

“This is one of my favorites,” Jones says of “Staring at the Wall,” which was co-written by Jones and Michels and features Norah on vocals, guitar, and piano with Leon on bass, drums, and tambourine. “It was kind of a left turn from everything else on the album. It's the first time I played guitar with Leon, we were just trying to come up with something different. I got on guitar and he got on drums and it just took off. It’s just so fun to play music sometimes, and I feel like on this album there were a lot of those times. He had a really cool guitar sound going for me so it just felt good.”

Jones will be making several TV appearances around the album release including performances on NBC The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (March 6), NBC The Today Show (March 8), and CBS Saturday Morning (March 9). She has also announced her Summer 2024 North American tour dates which kick off in late June and include sets at the Montreal International Jazz Festival (July 2) and Chicago’s Ravinia Festival (July 14), as well as shows in Seattle (Woodland Park Zoo Amphitheater, July 29), San Francisco (The Masonic, August 3), and Los Angeles (The Greek Theatre, August 4). BLUE NOTE ANNOUNCES EXPANDED DELUXE EDITION OF NORAH JONES’ ACCLAIMED 2012 ALBUM LITTLE BROKEN HEARTS PRODUCED BY DANGER MOUSE

31-TRACK 3-LP & 2-CD COLLECTION OUT JUNE 2 INCLUDES RARE BONUS TRACKS, ALTERNATE VERSIONS, REMIXES & A PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED LIVE VERSION OF THE ALBUM

LISTEN TO THE BONUS TRACK “KILLING TIME”

AVAILABLE DIGITALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY

A decade ago, Norah Jones defied expectations with her 5th studio album Little Broken Hearts, a striking collaboration with the producer Danger Mouse that arrived 10 years after her debut Come Away With Me prompting SPIN to call it “the second essential record of Norah Jones’ career.” On June 2, Blue Note Records will release the expanded 31-track Little Broken Hearts (Deluxe Edition) curated by Jones and Eli Wolf which includes rare bonus tracks, alternate versions, and remixes, as well as a previously unreleased live version of the album that was recorded for Austin City Limits in 2012. The Deluxe Edition is available for pre-order now as a 3-LP set, 2-CD set, and digital download. Listen to “Killing Time,” a bonus track that is available digitally for the first time today.

On April 22, Jones will also be releasing the separate Record Store Day exclusive Little Broken Hearts: Live At Allaire Studios. This limited edition 1-LP white vinyl release features a new live version of the album recorded in 2022 at one of her favorite studios with Jones joined by pedal steel guitarist Dan Iead, bassist Gus Seyffert, and drummer Brian Blade.

“10 years later, these are still some of my favorite songs in my catalogue to play live, no matter the instrumentation or arrangement, they just feel special,” says Jones. “And the way this album sounds makes my ears so happy. I'm incredibly thankful to Danger Mouse for letting me explore with him and opening up my world to a new way of doing things that continues to inspire and influence me.”

Norah Jones and Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) first worked together when the producer called upon her to contribute vocals to his acclaimed 2011 album ROME. It was Jones’ singular voice that caught Burton’s attention as he began to conceptualize his homage to classic Italian film score music. He already had Jack White in mind for the male role, and he and his collaborator Daniele Luppi realized that Jones’ voice would give the project the perfect balance it needed. Jones contributed three standout songs to ROME including “Black” (a live version of which is included on this set) and their connection proved deep enough that they decided to collaborate again on Jones’ next studio album.

In a first for her, Jones arrived to the studio empty-handed – no tunes, no arrangements, just a few ideas in a notebook. The songs were all built from the ground up with Jones and Burton sharing all the songwriting credits and performing the majority of the instrumental parts; Jones on piano, keyboards, bass, and guitar, and Burton contributing drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and string arrangements. The process was a complete change for Jones, but once they started it didn’t take long for her to warm to the challenges of creating on the fly using whatever resources she and Burton had between them. (Later, they brought in a band—including drummer Joey Waronker, bassist Gus Seyffert, and guitarist Blake Mills—to bolster many of the tracks.)

Released in 2012, Little Broken Hearts was a fascinating and unexpected step in Jones’ artistic evolution. Together she and Burton married their highly personal styles to create an entirely new sound. Created in the aftermath of a breakup, the album was a tour of stunningly nuanced environments. Twelve darkly luminous songs. Twelve little broken hearts. Each an exploration of wounded emotions from various perspectives that invariably led to a place of beauty and uplift.

While some tracks sounded like classic Norah Jones—such as the contemplative opener “Good Morning”—most explored rhythms, textures, and themes far from her comfort zone from the high-energy groove of “Say Goodbye” and the buoyant hooks of “Happy Pills” to the impressionistic dream-sequence reflections of “After The Fall” and the chilling murder ballad “Miriam.”

“I didn’t expect all the lyrics to tie in so well, especially since we wrote in such a spontaneous way,” Jones said at the time. “It turns out to be kind of a story. It has these different dimensions, things sneak up on you. And even though the record has all these cool sounds and interesting grooves that are Brian’s signature, mostly I’m proud of our writing together. The songs themselves.”

“Norah and I got very close as friends,” Burton said. “When you know somebody really well and you start writing together, we’re able to talk to each other in conversation through lyrics in a way.” Jones also recalled “We’d have these great conversations about love and relationships and the endless attempts to understand that stuff, and somehow they just seeped into what we were doing. That’s one of the great things about music, you can take the anxiety and anguish that you’re living and turn it into something that might really lift up somebody else.”

In fact, five of the additional tracks included on the Deluxe edition were taken from that remarkable live performance atop the iconic New York City skyscraper where Norah was joined by bassist Gus Seyffert, drummer Brian Blade, and vocalist Sasha Dobson.

The original studio album was produced by Leon Michels and features an excellent cast of musicians including Blade on drums, Tony Scherr and Nick Movshon on bass, Russ Pahl on pedal steel guitar, Marika Hughes on cello, Dave Guy on trumpet, Raymond Mason on trombone, and Michels on saxophone, flute, percussion, and more.

NORAH JONES LAUNCHES NEW PODCAST

NORAH JONES IS PLAYING ALONG

FEATURING THE 9-TIME GRAMMY AWARD WINNER

IN CONVERSATION & PERFORMING WITH HER FAVORITE MUSICIANS

Already an iconic voice of comfort around the world, Norah Jones is embarking on her first-ever podcast Norah Jones Is Playing Along. On each episode of this charming new series which launches today, the 9-time GRAMMY Award winning singer, songwriter, and pianist sits down with one of her favorite musicians for impromptu musical collaborations and candid conversation. Join Norah for an intimate look inside some of the most unique creative minds of our time as she hangs out with a wide variety of artists in the studio, chatting about life, music, and going wherever the conversation leads them. Each episode also features intimate duo performances of songs by her guests, occasional favorites from her own catalog, covers, and even songs written in the spur of the moment.

Episode 1 of Playing Along launches today featuring Jeff Tweedy, the acclaimed musician, songwriter, author, and Wilco frontman. The two have collaborated previously on Norah’s 2020 album Pick Me Up Off The Floor, as well as singles including “A Song With No Name” and “Wintertime.” Here Norah and Jeff have a wide-ranging conversation and perform five of Norah’s favorite songs of his including “Muzzle of Bees,” which will be released as a digital single this Friday, September 30.

“I love playing music with people and this seemed like a fun way for me to do it, especially with musicians who I don’t normally cross paths with,” Norah says. “I’m open to all kinds of music and look forward to pushing myself out of my comfort zone as well as reconnecting with past collaborators in a new way. I remember listening to Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz program from NPR on old bootleg tapes in high school and it was my honor to be one of her guests when I first started making records. This show has a similar spirit, with all the casualness of just getting together to play songs and chat with no parameters or formal expectations. The podcast format is perfect for this kind of connection between musicians and the audience. Collaboration is one of the best ways to stay inspired, it widens the mind to infinite possibilities.”
